Plainville Chiropractic Care of Headache and Tips for Headache and Migraine Prevention

September 17, 2019

Headaches and migraines are never welcome. Headache sufferers are typically quite ready for tips on how to prevent them. Migraine (a primary headache) sufferers over the age of 50 find themselves members of a global community with migraine being a foremost cause of disability. (1) Layden Chiropractic has some prevention tips and treatment relief ideas especially for our Plainville headache and migraine sufferers.

DIET AND WEIGHT

A healthy diet feeds the body and the mind. Researchers have described that migraine triggers come in a variety of forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary. A high-quality diet effectively helps manage migraine. Additionally, and more expressly, women with chronic migraine had a lower diet quality than that of women who had episodic migraine. (2) A new study was even more specific with the kind of diet helpful to migraine patients, specifically those who are overweight. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was revealed to be preventive of episodic migraines. Effectiveness was observed within one month of the diet change. (3) Layden Chiropractic is not recommending that any of our patients start a specific diet now! If a Plainville headache sufferer chooses to explore a new diet, Layden Chiropractic is here to chat and determine which diet (if any special one) is appropriate.

NUTRITION: Vitamin D

In much the same way, vitamin D supplementation is presented. Vitamin D deficiency has been found in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics of vitamin D have opened its supplementation to considered inclusion in the care and prevention of headache and migraine. One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day reduced the frequency of migraine in addition to routine drug therapy. More research needs to be completed, but vitamin D supplementation appears encouraging. (1) Layden Chiropractic studies the nutrition of each individual Plainville chiropractic patient and suggests supplementation when appropriate.

CHIROPRACTIC AND INTEGRATIVE CARE

Headaches of all varieties – primary headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are frequent complaints brought to the Plainville chiropractor. Research reported that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga), manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was helpful. More specifically, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care, some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported beneficial for migraine headache. (4)
