Could a Plant Compound Work Protect Your Spinal Discs?

July 29, 2026

If you've ever struggled with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs matter to your daily well-being and mobility. Now, noteworthy new research is investigating a natural substance called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to slow down disc degeneration at the cellular level.

WHAT IS QUERCETIN?

Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may directly support the health of your spinal discs.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND

The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin preserves nucleus pulposus cells — the cushion-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers determined that quercetin works by easing a specific inflammatory pathway and boosting a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. In everyday terms, this helps disc cells remove worn components and operate better, which may help delay the degeneration process.

The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a unique angle. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers determined that fibrosis — a kind of scarring — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a significant role in disc degeneration. They discovered that quercetin shows promise as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help prevent this scarring process from advancing.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU

While additional research is needed before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings add to a growing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can play a supportive role alongside gentle, non-surgical spine care like chiropractic treatment. At Layden Chiropractic, we believe in a whole-person approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's innate healing.
