Plainville Strong Bones, Fewer Falls Vitamin D Plays a Bigger Role Than You Think
VITAMIN D IS GOOD FOR US ALL, ESPECIALLY US OLDER FOLKS!
If you've ever had your chiropractor mention vitamin D, there's very good reason for that conversation. Researchers are finding more and more that this sunshine vitamin holds a bigger role in our health than we once realized — and two studies published just this year make that case especially well for those of us in our later years. At Layden Chiropractic, we love sharing research like this with our patients in Plainville — read on to see what the latest science reveals about vitamin D and your health and how adding it to the chiropractic treatment plan may benefit you!
WHAT THE LATEST RESEARCH IS TELLING US
A major systematic review and meta-analysis published in The BMJ: British Medical Journal in May 2026 examined 69 clinical trials concerning nearly 154,000 participants to evaluate calcium and vitamin D supplementation for the prevention of falls and fractures. Researchers found that calcium and vitamin D used in combination was associated with a somewhat reduced fracture risk — a meaningful finding for anyone who has watched a parent or grandparent have to recuperate from a fall. While no supplement is a magic bullet, this kind of large-scale study helps guide practical, whole-person care. (1)
The second paper, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in April 2026, zoomed out to look at the bigger picture — exploring what vitamin D means for our health across the full sweep of getting older. Vitamin D supplementation, especially combined with physical exercise, is linked with improvements in muscle strength and postural balance in osteoporotic patients, and a decreased risk of falling. That's big! And when it comes to staying upright and independent as we age, strong muscles and steady balance may be the most valuable protection we have. (2)
MORE THAN JUST BONES — VITAMIN D'S REACH SURPRISES US
The research also confirms that approximately 60% of elderly individuals are vitamin D-deficient, and that low vitamin D status is associated with musculoskeletal disease, cognitive decline, cardiovascular problems, and even all-cause mortality. In other words, this isn't just a bone issue — it touches nearly every system in our bodies as we age. (2)
YOUR SPINE, YOUR NUTRITION, YOUR CARE PLAN — ALL CONNECTED
Here at Layden Chiropractic, we care about the whole you — not just the joint or disc that brought you in the door. Cox® Technic, the gentle, non-force spinal manipulation we use to relieve back pain from disc and non-disc conditions, works brilliantly alongside good nutrition. Healthy vitamin D levels support the muscles and bones that border your spine, which means your treatments may feel better and hold longer when your body has the building blocks it desires.
