GOOD NEWS FOR YOUR SPINE — AND MAYBE YOUR MOOD

The surprising link between hands-on care and how you feel mentally

Most people come in to Layden Chiropractic because something hurts - back pain or neck pain. But a lot of them leave mentioning something else — "I just feel better." Turns out, science is beginning to catch up with that feeling.

THE BODY-MIND CONNECTION IS REAL

We are more likely to treat the body and mind as distinctly different things — the chiropractor handles the back, the therapist handles the stress. But your nervous system doesn't see it that way. More and more, researchers are discovering that physical, hands-on approaches   like the gentle delivery of spinal manipulation with Cox® Technic here at Layden Chiropractic may have ripple effects on how we feel emotionally and mentally, too.

WHAT THE RESEARCH IS FINDING

The science is moving fast, and three studies in particular made us want to share what we're reading. A 2026 systematic review by Schulz & Huzij looked specifically at manual therapy and depression, finding favorable patterns across many studies. (1) West & Huzij published a companion review focused on anxiety, with equally hopeful results. (2) And a 2025 study by Gordon and colleagues — which pooled results from multiple real-world trials — found that people receiving manual care actually felt less anxious, less depressed, and less stressed. That's not nothing. (3) These aren't small, fringe studies — they're rigorous reviews of multiple trials, and the findings are regular enough to get people in the research world truly enthusiastic.

A QUICK, HONEST NOTE

We want to be straightforward: this research is promising, not a prescription. Chiropractic care isn't a replacement for mental health treatment — especially if you're working with a therapist or psychiatrist, keep doing that. What this research does imply at is something many of us already feel intuitively: your body and your mind are always in conversation — and when one feels better, the other tends to notice. Whether you're a longtime chiropractic patient at Layden Chiropractic or just curious, we're always eager to talk about how chiropractic care fits into your bigger picture of health — mind included.
