Maybe Your Arm Pain Is Really Coming From Your Neck? Chiropractic Can Help.
If you're struggling with arm or shoulder pain that doesn't seem to improve, the root cause of your pain might not be in the shoulder itself. Clinical evidence increasingly points to the spine, particularly the neck and mid-back, as a common driver of upper extremity symptoms. Nerve roots that supply the shoulder, arm, and hand originate in the cervical spine, so pressure or irritation there can travel down the arm and mimic a local shoulder problem. That's why a comprehensive spinal evaluation is often an important starting point before treatment is planned. At Layden Chiropractic, that's how neck pain and related shoulder and arm pain start the chiropractic care path to relief.
EXAMINING THE SPINE FIRST
Newer research supports this connection. A 2026 case series by Hegarty and Shepherd found that examining and treating the spine contributed to resolving upper extremity pain in a series of patients, supporting the value of looking past the shoulder itself. (1) In following the Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management here at Layden Chiropractic, we always start with a complete exam!
WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS
Separately, a 2026 study by Anand and colleagues reported measurable improvement from hands-on care for cervical spondylosis, a common age-related condition that can contribute to neck and arm symptoms. (2) And a 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis by Yu and colleagues looked at different types of thoracic manual therapy and found improvement for shoulder dysfunction, showing how mobility work in the mid-back can affect shoulder function. (3) Our gentle approach for treating the thoracic spine as well as cervical spine with Cox® Technic is just what’s helpful.
A COX® TECHNIC CASE: A CLOSER LOOK
This spine-shoulder-arm connection isn't new. In a case study published in 2002, Kruse and Gregerson documented a patient with cervical spinal stenosis and radiculopathy— nerve compression causing pain radiating into the arm where in this patient was into the left shoulder and arm — who responded well to flexion-distraction spinal manipulation, the technique known as Cox® Technic. (4) The case illustrated how gentle, specific spinal decompression can relieve nerve-related arm pain without surgery, a finding that continues to be reflected in more recent research.

Listen to this PODCAST with Dr. Steven Baroody on The Back Doctors Podcast with Dr. Michael Johnson as he illustrates a patient who’d received lots of care for shoulder pain unsuccessfully only to discover with Dr. Baroody that the pain originated from the cervical spine! Her relieving care with The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management is described.
